The first day of practice ended with Jenson Button returning to the track after a fuel pump failure in the McLaren MP4-28 and topping the times almost a second quicker than Mark Webber’s Red Bull RB9. It is not a significant occurrence, however, as there is a long journey of development to go before the first race of the season.
Max Chilton had an accident when the suspension broke on the new Marussia, but the team is confident it can fix the problem and get out on track for some more laps today. The car will be driven by Luiz Razia, who has finally been confirmed as the team’s second driver.
James Rossiter is another new name to add to the list as he will drive the Force India VJM06 this afternoon; Jules Bianchi is also expected to drive the car this week, and is now the hot favourite for the vacant race seat alongside Paul di Resta.
Lewis Hamilton makes his debut today in the Mercedes W04, which duly broke down on Nico Rosberg yesterday. Also, Sergio Perez drives the McLaren MP4-28 for the first time today.
